Description:

In this GPS exercise, students begin by learning how the ancient Greek mathematician Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth. Students then emulate Eratosthenes methods in the field using modern technology, specifically GPS. In this lesson, students will calculate and consider both the polar and equatorial circumferences of the Earth as well as the Earth’s mass and volume.
