The Lewis and Clark lesson asks students to examine the westward and return route of the Lewis and Clark expedition, study the length of key stops and discuss what occurred at these locations, identify changes in knowledge and perception of the North American continent that resulted from the Lewis and Clark expedition. The first lesson in the Mapping US History project, “Journey of the Corps of Discovery,” follows the expedition of Lewis and Clark from the preparation stage and team, to reaching the Pacific, and back again. Students explore the route from a birds-eye-view making note of key sites and gaining a better understanding of the challenges of the terrain the explorers faced.
