Middlesex, Suffolk, and Norfolk Counties in Massachusetts

Using census data for Massachusetts, students will determine the location of environmental justice populations in three counties of Massachusetts. The purpose of this lesson is to help students to understand the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP), which can arise from putting discrete boundaries around continuous or semi-continuous phenomenon (such as population). This exercise will help students to think critically about spatial data.
